It was a big deal. A grande familia wedding in Spain. Over a week of Spanish vibes in Madrid and Segovia, including bullfighting, flamenco dancing, every type of deliciosas tapas with litres of Sangria. Finally, getting our Spanish hermano and hermana married in an ancient chapel in the heart of Segovia. That night, the newlyweds invite us to their honeymoon on the Balearic island of Mallorca. The bride, born and raised in Madrid, her lifelong friend arranged the honeymoon, she being a location scout for Spanish and German television on Mallorca. A once in a lifetime opportunity to see the island as a Mallorcan. After a long day of hungover traveling, we arrived to check in at the Hotel Bendinat late that night and everyone was spent. But wait! Off the veranda – there was this fairytale full moon hanging low over the Bay of Palma between us and the city. A “honey moon”. I popped off nearly a hundred hold your breath, handheld, super-long exposure frames to get just one. Everyone waited. Everyone was pissed…

This is the last thing you see when your soul leaves your body on Aspen Mountain. I know. Ever skied or snowboarded Aspen Mountain “Ajax” in January the next day after a blizzard any time after one o’clock when the top powder coat on the straight-down slope freezes in the afternoon shade? I can’t say I have. What I can say is I bloody well FELL down Aspen Mountain. Straight down. Nearly a mile. Silver Queen, Franklin Dump, Super 8, all double black diamond runs when not frozen and the only way down unless you take the lifts. I ain’t never seen so many other lucky devils on boards and skis dumping all around me. Even ski patrol! Black and blue for days. We pretty much stuck to the insane conditions at Snowmass after that. That was heaven. Special shout out to Smith® MIPS snow helmets, or I would have left my scalp hanging on an Aspen tree…

The bumpy, monsoon-soaked narrow-road drive through the jungly Jamaican mountains took all day from Montego Bay. It was hot and humid and I couldn’t wait to jump in the crystal-cool Caribbean Sea. I was warned not to venture out too far and to always swim with a buddy. I’ve been a swimmer all my life – so I took off from the platform and swam out to just past the reef heads, about a hundred meters from shore. Then it took me – and for the next terrifying twenty minutes, I struggled to not be taken under and swept away. Countless swimmers who ignore warnings have met their fate, since pirates roamed these craggy shores, due to unpredictable rip currents and undertows. Jamaican lore places the blame on mischievous mermaids, the “Sea Puss”, who lure their victims down to Davy Jones' Locker, never to be seen again…

At the end of the day in the West Indies, you want to kick back, watch the magnificent sunset with a frosty, strong-as-hell, Rum Punch. The punch that packs a punch. The secret formula to making a real-deal Jamaican rum punch cocktail is 1 part sour, 2 parts sweet, 3 parts strong and 4 parts weak. At The Caves, in addition to the usual fruity delicious ingredients, they use several of my secret sauce, must-have options and is not considered, by me, a true Jamaican Rum Punch without ‘em – Wray & Nephew white overproof rum, a dark rum, like Appleton 151 Dark Jamaican Rum, guava nectar and a few dashes of bitters. Any other way and it’s not the the real-deal. When mixed correctly, it’s colors remind you of this view, which I captured while sipping one, all the while enthralled in the latest episode of sunset-vision at the West End, on this day.

It woke me up. 0730. My third day in paradise – situated in a small hand-made hut on the rocks right next to the reef. A boat motor, humming, then slowing, pulling in. I rallied. came out for a cup of Blue Mountain java. It was a dug out boat with a noisy motor. The local fisherman dropped off a bushel of supermodel crustaceans – still flippin’ in the catch-of-the-day sink. Ever had jerk lobster? Guess what I had for dinner, besides a rum punch and a cool Red Stripe. Got butter?

Three weeks in Europe, working hard and playing harder. On the way back to LA, we decide to stop about halfway for some R & R in Miami Beach. The next day I hit the beach and had a few Bloody Marys before crashing. Hard. Jet lag hard. Not sure how much time elapsed before distant rumbling and a dark chill whispered across my face and into my ear. I shook open a bloodshot eye to a serious squall rolling in from the Bahamas and a small craft racing the storm as fast as it can, looking like it was not going to make it. Yet it was relatively calm and sunny here on the beach – a phenomenon I’ve seen before, that seems to illuminate the sea from within. I reached for my always-with-me camera, blinked a few more times and popped off a frame – then slipped back into nada…

Some of my favorite moments shooting fashion come spontaneously. This “little gift” happened in a fitting session for a lingerie company you probably know if you’re in to this addicting stuff. The thought and care of these delicate pieces are an art form unto themselves – carefully crafted – and the attention to detail signal the mating game. We did not showcase this piece in the actual fashion shoot, so it is even more special as it is, largely, unknown...

Lingerie is pure woman. Empowering, it is worn by women as a little gift to herself, more times than not, completely hidden under her clothing – lying in wait – completely unknown, but as a secret to the woman who wears it. European women especially know of its secret powers. My mother knew. Born in Spain and raised in the sexy city of Madrid, she introduced me to the power of lingerie, as she would take me with her on her shopping sprees. She had quite the collection, stored avec parfumée sachet, in a (nearly extinct) dedicated lingerie chest, to the pure delight of both my mother and my father. Spaniard women, like the French and Italians, they know a thing or two…
